On the June 17 G8/G20 Global Day of Action, there will be an anchor event in Toronto, Canada and 'national send-off events' in several other G20 countries.  We urge Heads of State to put money on the table at the G8 and G20 summits to tackle climate change, a continuous dependency on dangerous fossil fuels, and deepening poverty and food insecurity.

On June 17th in Toronto, a peaceful and vibrant event will send a clear message to Prime Minster Harper, the chair of this year's G8/G20 Summits, that he needs to stop dancing around the issues and put climate change on the agenda of the G8/G20.

'Prime Minister Harper and his back up bankers' will dance through downtown like fossil fools, leaving a 'Human Oil Spill' in their wake.  The event will demonstrate that Harper is out of step with what is needed to create a world that is fair and sustainable for all of us.

This event will launch a post card campaign directed at the Prime Minister.  The post card features a meticulous transformation of the winter scene on the Canadian $5 bill into the warmed world of the future, with the amount increased to $1 billion, dedicated to fighting climate change and poverty.  The postage paid card urges Prime Minister Harper to:

  • Keep Canada's promise to help poor countries fight climate change. Provide $1 billion over the next 3 years
  • End $2 billion a year of subsidies to the fossil fuel industry and shift to a clean energy economy
  • Commit to a Financial Transaction Tax - a 0.05% tax on speculative trading that would raise hundreds of billions of dollars a year to fight climate change and poverty at home and abroad.

Climate change is hitting the world's poorest first and hardest – that's why climate change, poverty and the global economy all need to be at the top of the Summit agendas.  A key challenge is raising the money needed to mitigate climate change and the shortened growing seasons and erratic weather it brings. By ending fossil fuel subsidies and committing to a Financial Transaction Tax, governments can raise the money that's needed – and more.
